Red Buckeye is a striking deciduous shrub or small tree that typically grows to about 10-20 feet in height and width. Red Buckeye has particularly showy, vibrant red flowers that bloom in early spring. Flowers attract a variety of pollinators, including hummingbirds and butterflies. Foliage consists of large, palmate leaves which are bright green and turn a yellowish-green in the fall. The tree produces distinctive, rounded seed capsules in the late summer or early fall, which contain glossy brown seeds. 4-6 hours of sun produces optimal blooms, but it can be sited in shadier conditions. It can adapt to many soil types and moisture conditions, included tougher, urban conditions. Works great as a specimen plant and can be pruned if a more domesticated look is preferred.
