    Purple Clematis is a climbing, perennial, deciduous vine found mostly in the Northeastern US. It has very showy, purple, bell-shaped flowers that are up to 2" long. Leaves are trifoliate and occur all along the stem. Flowers are followed by very showy, feather-like seed heads. This is a woody, deciduous vine that can be cut back to the ground each year to promote more vigorous growth and flowering. Best flowering is in full sun, but leaves can become washed out in our more southerly states. Part sun in average soil would be the more ideal conditions in North Carolina. It is naturally found in rocky, calcareous woodlands, and sunny outcrops. This species is considered rare or threatened across most of its range.
