Large, mauve colored flowers are full of nectar and a favorite of Eastern Tiger Swallowtails and just about every other pollinating insect. Each flowering head is composed of hundreds of small flowers that open over several weeks. Leaves are bright green, with new growth and stems having strong purple tones. Spent flowers turn a rich brown and remain attractive through the winter for people and birds. Make sure to leave old stems up as long as possible for stem nesting insects. The large hollow stems are ideal habitat. Fairly adaptable when it comes to sun and soil. This is a very large plant prone to heavy reseeding–not recommended for smaller gardens. Can be cut in half in early summer to promote shorter, bushier plants.
