Spiderworts are members of the Dayflower Family, which means that each flower is ephemeral and only opens in the morning. New violet-purple flowers open each day in late spring through early summer. Flowers have dozens of small purple hairs and prominent yellow anthers that contrast well with the purple petals. Foliage is an attractive olive-green color that adds great color and texture to the garden. Foliage often declines in peak summer, but a haircut will promote fresh green growth and a vigorous second flowering in the fall. This species is more clump forming than other species that tend to run. Plants will perform best in part sun with average soil, but can tolerate more or less sun. Moist soils are appreciated when planted in more sun.
