    This low-growing, stoloniferous violet forms dense mats, making it an excellent ground cover for shaded woodland gardens and rock gardens.Its bright purple flowers emerge in early spring and continue blooming into late summer. It thrives in an average, well drained soil, and is drought tolerant when established. 

    ‘Silver Gem’ is a cultivar of Walter’s Violet, known for its silvery-green variegated foliage.  In North Carolina and other mild climates, the foliage remains semi-evergreen to evergreen, while in colder regions, it may go fully dormant in winter before reemerging in spring.
