Prairie Dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis)
Grass FamilyDense, arching mounds of fine textured foliage define Prairie Dropseed. This grass makes a great groundcover, lawn alternative, or pollinator garden support plant. In late summer airy seed stalks rise up in shades of green and gray. Plenty of seeds are produced that are favored by a variety of birds. Foliage turns a coppery brown for fall and winter and keeps its sturdy mound shape–it’s easy to imagine all the critters that could live under the dense strands of foliage through the winter. It is a true full sun plant and prefers lean, dry soil, but can tolerate occasional moist periods.
