Early Goldenrod (Solidago juncea)
Aster Family
True to its name, Early Goldenrod is the earliest blooming Goldenrod in North Carolina, usually beginning in mid-June. It continues to bloom well into August when many of our other Goldenrods are just starting to bloom. Yellow flowers are arranged in a panicle and have a fireworks-like display. Hundreds of different insect and other species use this plant for its pollen, nectar, seeds, foliage, and stems. It is one of the most beneficial plants to have in the garden and in the wild. It is very drought tolerant when established, and planting in poor soil will keep this plant in check. Too rich of soil, and this species can become aggressive. It goes well with Butterfly Milkweed, Dense Blazing Star, Switchgrass cultivars, and Purple Coneflower.
