Lyre-leaved Sage (Salvia lyrata)
Mint FamilyLyre-leaved Sage gets its name from the highly variable. but generally lyre-shaped leaves. Evergreen leaves are mostly basal, and have strong purple veining in the cooler months and especially when planted in sunnier condition. Blue flowers are produced in mid-spring on a 1' flowering stalk. Flowers open slowly over several weeks. This sage is highly adaptable and can grown in most garden conditions. Best flowering a growth will occur in part sun with average soil conditions. Because of its low stature, evergreen nature, fast growth, and ability to be mowed repeatedly, Lyre-leaved Sage makes an excellent lawn replacement. It also functions will as a ground cover or filler plant. Plants are short-lived but will re-seed in abundance.
