    Carolina Wild Petunia (Ruellia caroliniensis)
    Acanthus Family

Carolina Wild Petunia is a charming wildflower that brightens up the woodland garden.  2" purple flowers open up 1 or 2 at a time, and only last a single day. This petunia has a very long bloom time, often continuing for up to three months. It is naturally found in woodlands and is quite shade tolerant. It is not picky about soil, and is typically drought resistant once established. Seeds explode off the plant when ripe, so little volunteers pop up nicely around the garden. It is not considered aggressive and can make a great filler plant. Plant among ferns, Green & Gold, White Wood Aster, or Zig-Zag Goldenrod.
