Red Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum 'Shenandoah' )
Grass FamilyThis vase shaped, medium sized switchgrass is known for its striking red, purple, and pink streaked foliage. Not picky about soil, but prefers full sun for best form and color. Looks best planted in groups or bands. Winter form is extremely attractive and provides habitat for insects and birds through the winter. Looks great with Maryland Golden Aster, Goldenrods, and many of the purple, fall blooming asters.
Blooms: Reddish-pink, 6-8 weeks, July-August
Leaves: Green leaves with strong streaks of red and purple, especially later in the season
