Sweetbay Magnolia (Magnolia virginiana)
Magnolia FamilyThis is our most moisture tolerant and, in my opinion, landscape friendly magnolia. Trees can be either single stemmed or multi-trunked depending on how you prune in its younger years. Both ways look quite nice. While typically under 30’, some species can get taller under ideal circumstances. Some leaves will remain on the tree through winter, especially mild ones. The 2-3” creamy white flowers open in the day and close during the night for several days. Flowers are followed by attractive pinkish green seed pods dangling with bright red fruit for birds.
