Wild Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens)
Hydrangea FamilyWild Hydrangea is a fast growing, low maintenance shrub that attracts many insects with its late summer blooms. It prefers to be in part shade in moist to average soils. It can be placed in part sun only if the soil stays consistently moist. This shrub flowers on new wood, and can be pruned back almost to the ground for increased blooms and a tidier look. The 2-6” flower clusters consist of smaller, fertile flowers in the center, surrounded by larger sterile flowers. Many cultivars of this plant exist–be wary of buying any composed of all sterile flowers. This shrub is particularly effective as a low hedge, but also looks good as a specimen plant.
