Dwarf Fothergilla (Fothergilla gardenii)
Witch-hazel FamilyEvery garden should have a Fothergilla. These are compact, no fuss, easy to grow shrubs that provide early joy with February flowers. They are not too fussy about sun or soil, but ideal conditions would be morning through early afternoon sun, and somewhat moist soil. The creamy, fragrant, cone-shaped flowers start emerging before the leaves do, making them a standout in the winter landscape. Matte, blue-green leaves emerge soon after and look great throughout the growing season. Leaves turn brilliant fall colors, particularly when sited in full soon. This is a suckering shrub, but is not aggressive. Suckers can be easily removed if spread is not desired.
