Dense Blazing-star (Liatris spicata)
Aster Family
Its long bloom time and numerous, nectar-rich flowers make Blazing-star a butterfly garden must-have. You’ll be amazed at how many swallowtails can fit on one flowering stalk! The long wands of this plant can lean wildly in the garden, making them look like fireworks going off. Too much fertilizer, not enough sun, and poor companion planting can all lead to heavy flopping in Blazing Star. Try planting with early blooming Goldenrods, Switchgrass, Butterfly Milkweed, or Purple Coneflower. This is one of the most moisture tolerant Liatris, but will not appreciate being too wet over winter.
