    Largeleaf Waterleaf (Hydrophyllum macrophyllum)
    Borage Family

This species is characterized by its large, mottled leaves, which are  deeply lobed with a coarse texture. The white mottling on leaves resembles water spots, hence the name. Mottling is strongest in young leaves and fades with age. In late spring, white flowers in a globular cluster rise up on a short stem. It is found naturally in rocky, moist forests, usually where lots of calcareous rocks are present. In the garden, it thrives in well-drained, moist soils and prefers partial to full shade. The color, shape, and texture of the leaves make this a unique addition to the woodland garden.
