Venus Fly Trap
Venus Fly Traps are only find on the wild in a few counties in North and South Carolina, but they are known across the world. These carnivorous plants have long since been in decline due to illegal poaching and habitat loss. Fly Traps cultivation has come a long way, with most commercial production being done by tissue culture. Our plants are seed grown and offsets of mother plants. Fly Traps attract prey with nectar and snap close on prey after trigger hairs have been activated twice. Digestive enzymes then dissolve the prey for absorption by the plant. This process takes about a week. You should never trigger the trap unless there is prey--it is very energetically costly to the plant. Traps can only catch a few meals before the trap dies off and more are produced.
These are outdoor plants that have very specific conditions needed to survive.
* Full sun
*No fertilizer ever
*Rain water or reverse osmosis filtered water only
*Must be kept consistently moist (does not need to be in sitting water constantly)
*Growing in pots is best--75% sphagnum peat moss, 25% coarse sand
*Overwinter outside (smaller pots can be moved closer to homes for protection)
*Do not remove brown, "dying" traps until late winter (they may look unsightly, but they are still absorbing nutrients)
