Blue Sage (Salvia azurea)
Mint Family
Blue Sage is best suited for the middle of the garden where it can be supported by other medium sized perennials or grasses. The sky blue flowers will have no trouble standing out in a crowd and are a favorite of bumblebees. This sage also takes well to an early-mid season pruning to encourage a bushier growth habit and more flowers. This is an extra tough species that is well suited for trouble spots with shallow, rocky soil, or clay. Rich soil or fertilizer will encourage flopping. Dies back fully every year and can be late to emerge in the spring. As with most Salvias, leaves are highly aromatic, which acts as a deterrent to deer and rabbit.
