Royal Catchfly (Silene regia)
Pink Family
Bright red flowers are a treasure in the wildflower garden. This catchfly has a true, vivid red that will bring hummingbirds and other nectar feeders to feed in mid-summer. Hairy stems and leaves are quite sticky and are capable of trapping insects, hence the name catchfly, although no nutrition is gained from it's catches. Best planted in the middle of the garden, as the lower foliage tends to become unsightly in the heat of the summer. Try planting with Little Bluestem or other native grasses. This is a (somewhat) short lived perennial, so be sure to let it go to seed so you will have plants for the future.
