Pink Muhly Grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris)
Grass Family
This is one of the most popular landscaping grasses for good reason. The clouds of hazy-pink blooms are an unusual color to see in the fall garden. Pink color lasts for almost two months before fading into golden brown for the rest of winer. Semi-evergreen foliage is needle-like and has both a mounding and upright look. It can be cut back in early spring, but performs well without a haircut too. Other noteworthy attributes include high deer resistance, drought tolerance, and ability to thrive in most soil types. This grass can be used intermixed in the sunny garden, or for a truly stunning effect, planted in mass. Pink Muhly combines well with many garden plants, including Goldenrods, fall blooming asters, Purple Coneflower, and Spotted Beebalm. It can also be successfully grown in containers.
