Northern Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum pedatum)
Brake Fern Family
Northern Maidenhair Fern is a delicate fern known for its finely divided, lacy fronds that radiate from a central point, creating a fan-like appearance. The leaflets are typically a vibrant green that turns a golden yellow in the fall, before going dormant for the winter. This fern thrives in shaded to partially shaded environments and prefers well-drained, moist soil. Overly dry or sunny conditions will result in an early dormancy. It’s an excellent choice for woodland gardens-- its soft texture and airy foliage make it a an easy filler plant that provides the perfect backdrop to other woodland perennials. Spreads slowly by rhizomes.
